The Twelve Apostles
Given
the growing controversy over the developments along this coast it's
about time I started writing. The Twelve Apostles is the first of
the main tourist attractions along the Shipwreck Coast as you drive
from Melbourne, with most people driving straight past Gibson's
Steps.
At
this point the road is very close to the cliff tops with only a thin
strip of national park in between. The thin, poor soils do not
support much vegetation and the lack of towns make this a relatively
remote section of Victoria. It's not hard imaging what it would be
like being washed up on shore after a shipwreck, a thin beach (if
you were lucky) between the waves and the cliffs and any possibility
help a long way off.
The isolation of this stretch of coast is as much a part of its
character as are the impressive cliffs, gorges and off shore
formations.
But a world class attraction requires facilities that
international tourists 'expect'. Victoria is now "On the
Move"
