The Otways

Melba Gully State Park

 [ otway001 ]

Melba Gully is a relatively broad and open gully containing some very tall Antarctic beeches that are often covered with epiphytes. A well maintained path winds its way through the forest and there is a large picnic area at the carpark. This, together with the nearby Maits Rest Rainforest Walk, is some of western Victoria's best rainforest.

The walk also passes by another giant tree. The next time you go out of your way to visit a giant tree, just remember that they were once a part of a forest of giant trees. But with clearfell logging such forests are becoming increasingly rare. These rainforest walks show you glimpses of what was once widespread across the Otways but has largely disappeared through clearing for agriculture and logging.

The picnic area is currently receiving an overhaul and it is obviously destined to be heavily promoted once it is completed.
