WWW Links
This page contains links to various organisations (mostly community groups) that are struggling against attacks on our parks or just plain bad planning. This page lives in my tourist guide because often these appalling plans are created in the name of tourism promotion. If you know of a page that should be linked here, let me know.
Specific Locations and Issues
Save Albert Park
"'Save Albert Park' is not against the Grand Prix itself. It is against holding it in Albert Park which is an inappropriate and very costly venue. The race should be held at a permanent purpose-built track well away from residential areas."
- The fight goes on and there are still many unanswered questions. The issue goes far beyond holding a car race in a public park.
The Mallacoota Boat Ramp
"... most people see the need for an up-graded boat ramp. Where opinions start to differ greatly is as to the nature and extent of such a development."- At a meeting in 1990 the plans for a new boat ramp were rejected because the location was agreed to be unsafe. In 1996, another meeting, another plan, the same location, the same outcome.
Acland Street Residents Association, Inc.
When your suburb is promoted as a tourist destination then you're going to have trouble. The development of an area rarely follows the them of what drew people to the area in the first place.
Port Phillip Conservation Council Inc.
- "The Port Phillip Conservation Council Inc. works for the better conservation of Port Phillip Bay and the waters, beaches, foreshores, sea-bed, tributaries, environs and air above it."
Save The Otways
"water production and tourism - not woodchips!"
- Check out the Wilderness Society's page on the Otways
I went to Wild Dog Ridge and neighbouring Seaview Ridge to see for myself. The sign at the start of the track says it all.
Friends Of Local Koalas Land And Wildlife (FOLKLAW)
With the amalgamation of 3 shires into a much larger Mornington Peninsula Shire -it was apparent that not only would a new Conservation Strategy need to be developed covering the whole of Peninsula, but also Management Strategy aimed specifically at koalas to ensure that they and their habitat survive. Two years later we are still waiting for the Conservation strategy & a commitment to implement conservation measures.
Friends of Chiltern Park Inc.
Critical Mass (Melbourne)
- "Critical Mass started in 1992 in San Francisco as a way of bringing various people together in a festive reclaiming of public space. The first ride drew 60 cyclists, now over 400 ride every month. Critical Mass has spread around the globe and is also celebrated here in Melbourne. "
