Sheet of Water

[ gramp049.jpg ]

While the Grampians are best noted for there mountains there is another aspect to this region that creates a different sort of environment. In the Victoria Valley in particular are some very flat areas which, in winter, become vast sheets of water.  Needless to say that's why this spot is called Sheet of Water.

Now while it looks like a swamp from the road that bisects it, it is actually a creek, some 500m wide in places and between knee and thigh deep. I've walked through it and canoed around it as well (not that you can get very far but it was easier than walking) but one word of warning, I am just over 2m tall, so my knee - thigh deep may be a little deeper for some of you.

Fortunately the southern freshwater alligator found in Moora Moora Reservoir hasn't made it this far up stream yet which is a good thing as they've been reportedly seen taking the odd puma from the banks of the lake... ;-)

But jokes aside this really is a fascinating place with the water milfoil looking like grass as you paddle across it but not many lawns also provide reflections of the trees. Needless to say you'll find all sorts of water birds here if you stop the car and get out and walk around.
