Reservoir Creek
I
stumbled across this creek (literally) after a cross country walk in
search of a good view of the Major Mitchell Plateau from the
southeast. Having walked through some pretty thick bottle brush I
decided to find an alternate route back to the car and headed
downhill, hoping to walk along the creek and back to the road.
As I got further down towards the creek the bush began to change,
almost approaching rainforest vegetation. This shouldn't really have
been any surprise since the Major Mitchell Plateau has an annual
rainfall in the range of 1000-1200mm although this falls off quite
rapidly as you move away from the mountains. But the summers are
still quite dry so it is only in the very sheltered sections that
any semblance of temperate rainforest exists.
It was an interesting walk, but not likely to be one to make it
onto a bushwalker's must do list. There aren't really too many
places that you can go in this part of the Grampians since any
uphill walk would only get you to the bottom of a cliff and there
are no tracks.
