McKenzie Falls
McKenzie
Falls is the largest and most popular waterfall in the Grampians.
You'll find it on all of the postcards and brochures and just about
anything else to do with the Grampians. Apart from the main
waterfall there are also many other waterfalls and cascades along
the McKenzie River, many, but not all, are visible from the walking
track that follows the river down to the main waterfall. It is so
popular that it is very difficult to get a photograph of it without
someone in it.
The
flow of water over the falls is controlled by the outflow from Lake
Wartook and these photographs show you what it looks like for most
of the year. On occasions it floods, as can be seen by the tree fern
in the middle of the top photograph which has had its leaves
stripped by floodwaters.
The
path down to the falls has recently been renovated to cope with the
increased traffic. The track down from the main tourist road, south
of the falls, has been closed but the lookout point above the falls
is still open.
In summer it's a great place to escape on hot days. The narrow
gorge at the base of the falls turns into a natural air conditioner
and people congregate in the shade of the trees opposite the
waterfall. The only problem is that the walk back up to the carpark
makes you hot and sweaty again.
