Heatherlie Quarry

[ gramp046.jpg ]Heatherlie Quarry isn't all that well known in Victoria and yet it is the source of the sandstone used for some of Melbourne's more important buildings including the unfinished Parliament House. Because of it's historical interest efforts have been made to restore some of the quarry but on he whole it is relatively untouched. There were rumblings of the quarry being reopened to provide stone once again for the completion of parliament house but this has since fizzled.

[ gramp047.jpg ]And so it sits, at the base of the Mt Difficult Range north of Halls Gap, partly forgotten and off the main tourist routes. This, if anything, will probably be what will preserve it as the restoration efforts are unhindered by the effects of popularity.
