Errinundra Plateau
On
my second visit to East Gippsland with my new (second hand) 4WD I
decided once and for all to visit the Errinundra Plateau for myself
and see what all of the fuss was about. At the time, the region was
often on the news with logging protests every week. I only had two
days left and my trip was not exactly planned. I spent the first day
driving around at random looking for that elusive rainforest that
was to be jealously guarded from the loggers. Most of the areas I
drove through were either regrowth forest or had been recently clear
felled (but we don't clear fell forests any more do we?).
The
regrowth forest was spectacular despite it's lack of diversity. The
entire sides of mountains were covered with tree ferns below the
towering mountain ash. With so much of the area logged, any vestiges
of virgin rainforest would be worth fighting for. I found a nice
clearing next to a creek to set up camp in but after removing
numerous leeches from my clothes while cooking dinner I decided to
sleep in the car.
On my way home I found some better rainforest and climbed Mt
Ellery for the view. Must come back after I find out where the
better rainforest is.
