Bemm River Rainforest

 [ eastgipps011 ]

Undoubtedly one of the best ways to see the rainforest along the Bemm River is from a canoe. There is a nice little campsite about half way between the town and the highway. above the second rapids. There is a nice deep pool for swimming and it's pretty easy to get the canoe down to the water.

So far I have only paddled about 2.5km upstream where the river becomes very much narrower and (in summer) much shallower with a few short sections of walking. It pays not to be arachnophobic as the branches across the river are laden with spiders. I don't mind them too much but occasionally there were too many in the canoe and it was time to stop and set some of them ashore (or adrift).

On this trip we were lucky enough enough to see several kingfishers, a snake swimming across the river and a very close look at a platypus ducking in and out of the water from a semi-submerged log. Don't have a canoe?... well there's always the Bemm River Rainforest Walk...
