Road Kill
There's a road safety slogan that goes simply "Speed
Kills". It is aimed at reducing the number of human deaths on
Victoria's roads but speed is also a major factor in animal roadside
deaths.
Most animals are killed in the early or late hours of the day
when they come out into the open to feed. Avoiding animals usually
requires nothing more than slowing down when you see them as they
will often move suddenly and unpredictably when you get near to
them. Dipping your headlights will also give them a chance to see
where they are going, reducing the last minute panic as your car
approaches.
Apart from killing the animal, a large kangaroo, wombat or emu
can do considerable damage to a vehicle. If you do (or have) hit a
wombat just stop and think for moment. Most wombats are usually
standing still when blinded by car headlights at night and you were
driving at a speed where you didn't have enough time/ control to
avoid it. What if it had been a person?
