Goannas

Goannas are much sneakier than possums. They skulk around campsites staying largely out of site until they see their opportunity to wander in and make a grab for some food. Growing up to a metre and longer they make a formidable looking adversary but they are very timid and will run off and climb the nearest tree at the slightest hint of a threat.

This is where problems can arise if you are in an area where there are no trees and you are the next best thing to climb. If a goanna makes a run for you it is not because it's going to attack you, it just wants to climb up to your head because you are the nearest thing that approximates a tree. Duck, their claws are very long and sharp (for climbing trees of course).

Goannas are prevalent in East Gippsland.
