Moroka Gorge

[ alpine003 ] Moroka Gorge is a bit more of a challenging walk than Bryce's Gorge but it can still be done as a day walk. It begins at Horseyard Flat which is also a good camping area and is a relatively busy walk from spring to autumn. In winter, the road is unmaintained and heavy snow stops most people from driving there.

[ alpine004 ] There are two tracks, one over the ridge, and one along the river. Opinions are divided as to which is the easiest way in. I prefer the river track on the way in because it is a very interesting walk, with sections following the river bed. On the way back, however, I prefer the ridge track as it is faster. The hardest part of selecting the ridge track is that the track junction is at the end of a steep climb out of the gorge and some people opt for a change of slope rather than a shorter route.

There are four main waterfalls on this stretch of river but most people don't go beyond the third. The gorge is below the snow line, but as you can see from these photos from the Queen's Birthday long weekend, 1994, it does occasionally snow there. I had a very quiet weekend as there was already a fair amount of snow on the road and most people don't go walking far in the snow.
