Bryce's Gorge
Guys Hut
![[ alpine061 ]](images/alpine061.jpg)
As far as alpine huts go, Guy's Hut is one of the good
ones. It's not too draughty, there's a good sleeping area and a
stone floor. All this and only 1km from the road... or in winter
14km from the gate. There are two tables inside although I prefer to
cook on the table outside where you can actually see what you're
doing and there's a bit more head room.
The night shot above was taken on the Queen's Birthday long
weekend (2000), with light provided by a half moon and my headlamp.
There had been heavy snow falls two weeks earlier but it was now
melting again. The scene covers about 240° looking southwest, with
the Southern Cross in the upper left.
The yellow/orange streak through the centre of the photograph is
my headlamp. During the second exposure I walked out the first
section of track and then returned, pointing my headlamp at the
camera as often as possible. This also attracted the attention of
two skiers who were also going to the hut and were looking for a
landmark ;-)
I also shot a couple of
panoramas there the next day. |
