Mount Bogong

 [ alpine037 ]

Mt Bogong is Victoria's highest peak (1896m). The area is very popular for hang gliding and related sports and judging by the number of interstate number plates, visitors figure that if they are going to drive all the way to Victoria's alpine area they may as well go to the highest.

[ alpine040 ] The most common access route is from Mountain Creek. The walk from the carpark to the peak is Victoria's highest walk (1350m altitude difference) and it catches many people by surprise. The usual altitude difference between mountains and valleys is 'only' around 700 to 800m. The other aspect of the walk that makes it so challenging is that it's virtually all uphill. There are only a few short stretches that are level or drop back down in altitude, for the rest of the way it's just up and up .... and up as I discovered one New Year's eve.
